Solent Stay Upgrade
It’s been a long time in the making. SANITY has a removable inner forestay, or solent stay. Solent because it is mounted within 150mm of the headstay at the mast, although it does not run parallel with the forestay.
The previous configuration had a 6mm stainless stay and conventional turnbuckle. The installation was perfectly functional although not easily tensioned or stowed. We have removed this and fitted a Wichard Babystay tensioner wth 10mm Dyneema stay.
The original installation has some well thought out aspects. The stay is connected to a cross bollard mooring cleat, with a Stainless connection mounted to the top. This is intentional but not part of the original boat configuration. So that the attachment point on deck serves two purposed.
Internally a backing plate with mirrored welded connection attaches to a chain. The chain connected to an eye bolt in the stem providing support for the stay and removing stress on the deck.
It is a satisfying result although not completely finished. The Toggle and backing plate still requires installation at the mast. The list of masthead jobs continues, I hope to complete them all in one mast pull project.
